California Dreamin’: California’s Unemployed Getting Hungry After One Month Without Benefits

[heading]California Dreamin’: California’s Unemployed Getting Hungry After One Month Without Benefits[/heading]

“In a sluggish economy, never, ever f*** with another man’s livelihood.” – Guido, the “killer pimp” in the movie “Risky Business.”

“California Dreamin'” might come to mean hunger-induced hallucinations as 80,000 jobless Californians remain cut off from their unemployment benefits. The problem has been going on for one-month-and-a-half, but really escalated after September 1.

EDD Fails To Test Before Deployment Of New Software

When the Employment Development Department (EDD) upgraded its 30-year-old system over Labor Day (September 1), the new system failed, and state workers were forced to process “benefits” manually.

This left many without their expected income for weeks. State officials claim they are working 24/7, but don’t know when they will catch up. The EDD has apologized and notified affected Californians by mail.

A spokesman for Gov. Jerry Brown referred inquiries to the EDD.

“Some are angry and upset. Some simply need the checks so they can pay the bills,” said state Sen. Ted Lieu (D-Torrance). “If this is prolonged, then it will cause ripple effects for people who can’t pay their living expenses.”

California Awake!

California’s unemployed are getting off their asses to make this right. They have started a Facebook group to “Audit and Reorganize California’s Economic Development Department.” Direct action has also been taken on the EDD’s Facebook page:

“The vast majority of payments were issued timely with an exception of a small group of complex cases associated with a federal unemployment extension..this is bs!!A SMALL GROUP COMPLEX CASES..!!? OUR CASES ARE NOT COMPLEX ,,HERE ARE A HOUNDRED DIFFERENT EXAMPLES ON THIS PAGE, AND WE ARE ALL WITHOUT OUR OUTHORISED PAYMENTS. IDIOTS! WHOS IN CHARGE OF THIS FIASCO….ACCOUNTABILITY??? NOT OUR GOVERNMENT!! FUK CALI!!”

In these difficult and trying times, unemployed Californians are sharing knowledge, for knowledge is power:

“Hey guys while your waiting on payments apply for food stamps you can be single man or woman single with kids or married with limited income I’m a single man no kids and I got approved for 174.00 a month go to your local DPSS office or apply on line at just do it every little bit helps.”

More solutions:

“CLASS ACTION NOTICE: Contact me directly if you would like to be added to a list of individuals interested in a class action suit against the EDD. Californians would be the class, normally cases like these require a few more primaries. Thank you.”

After learning about how lengthy a process class action lawsuits are, one of California’s unemployed wonders if protesting might be the better option:

“So does protesting a more viable option then? I have never protested before but this is infuriating, strength in numbers.”

As you can tell, California’s unemployment problem is serious.

A mere two years ago, the percentage of working-age Californians with jobs had fallen to a record low. At the time, only 55.4% of working-age Californians (16 or older) had a job. In the following video, 60 Minutes admits the true unemployment rate in California has reached 22%.
